Easy ways to protect your accounts

Our goal when matched betting is always to blend in.

Bookmakers (especially corporates) can have huge volumes of bets. Whilst in the long term they will always be able to identify our accounts (as we're making profit), we want to make it as hard as possible for them to do so.

With that in mind, here are some simple strategies to help protect your accounts:

  • Mind your stake: Don't ever, ever, ever place a back bet with a non-standard stake (e.g. $12.34) at a bookmaker (doing so at the exchange is fine). Always round your stakes to the nearest whole number, or at worst to the nearest .50. This makes your bets look far more like those of a recreational bettor.
  • Keep it mainstream: Avoid betting on obscure markets or events. Stick to popular sports and markets that recreational bettors are likely to bet on. This helps your betting patterns look more natural.
  • Don't bet too early: A good way of judging how much volume a bookmaker has on a specific market is to consider the matched amount on the exchange. If there's very little money matched, it's likely that very few recreational bettors are betting on that market. Avoid betting on such markets, as your bets will stand out more.
  • Don't commit fraud: Despite what bookmakers might suggest, matched betting is totally legal. However, committing fraud (e.g. by using fake details to open accounts) is not. There's a revolving door of bookmakers in Australia. If you do get gubbed from one, just move on to the next. There's no need to commit fraud.
  • Avoid arbing: Whilst arbing (i.e. placing bets that guarantee a profit regardless of the outcome) can be profitable, it's a big red flag for bookmakers. Whilst your accounts aren't gubbed, avoid arbing. Once they're gubbed, feel free to arb to your heart's content.

Regardless of which approach you take (sustainable vs aggressive), these are no cost strategies that you should always follow.

Remember, your accounts will be gubbed eventually. The goal is to make it as hard as possible for bookmakers to identify you as a professional bettor in the meantime.
