Mug Betting

Use Stallion for normal-looking racing activity

Scenario

Say you want to place a normal-looking racing bet to keep an account active for sustainability purposes, while keeping the expected cost under control.

You are not trying to maximise promo EV. You are trying to avoid placing a random mug bet with no idea what it costs.

Set up the race

Open the race and choose:

Mode
Mug

Use Mug mode when account-sustainability is the goal.

Stake

Enter the amount you are comfortable staking with the bookmaker.

Add the bookmaker where you want account activity as an active bookmaker.

Pick a candidate

Start with the cost or return split. A small expected loss may be acceptable if the bet looks normal and fits the account.

If the candidate is worth checking, confirm:

  • the bookmaker is the account you want activity on
  • the runner and market look normal for that account
  • the back price still exists
  • the lay price and liquidity are usable if you are hedging
  • the race has enough time left to place cleanly

Mug mode is not a reason to take any price. It is a way to understand the cost of activity before placing it.

Underlay

Underlay can make sense in mug betting if you want to keep more natural exposure.

Use it deliberately. It can make the bet look less perfectly hedged, but it changes the return split and can increase the cost if the wrong side wins.

Place, save, and track

Once the live prices match the candidate closely enough:

  1. Place the bookmaker bet.
  2. Place the exchange lay bet if you are hedging.
  3. Save the play with .
  4. Update the saved play if the odds or lay stake changed.
  5. Add it from Scratchpad to Tracker once the saved details match what you placed.

Common mistakes

  • Treating Mug mode like an EV-maximising mode.
  • Taking a large expected loss for no account reason.
  • Ignoring whether the bet looks normal for the bookmaker.
  • Forgetting that underlay changes the return split.
  • Failing to track the placed bet afterwards.
